In 2021, FUMC began hosting a summer reading program, Reading with Friends, modeled after Project Transformation, eventually applying to become a PT site. We are now proud to be an official church site for Project Transformation in North Texas beginning in 2024.

Project Transformation (PT) operates free eight-week summer literacy programs serving children in neighborhoods throughout North Texas. Each day, children read one-on-one with community volunteers and participate in activity-based literacy intervention. Children also participate in daily enrichment activities including recreational play and exercise, creative arts, and interaction with young adults and community volunteers, who inspire and encourage youth daily to make responsible, sound decisions.

Volunteer Opportunities

Bookworm Buddies/Reading

Read with children during program hours. These opportunities are generally available every Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Dinner with Members

Support our Americorps Members by providing dinner during the summer. These dinners are a great way to be involved, providing a time and place for church members and/or partners to connect with our AmeriCorps members. Dinners are on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday during the Summer.

Family Fun Night

Family Fun Nights are events that will happen twice during the summer. These nights are concentrated on providing a fun space for all involved at PT to engage with one another. Volunteers are often needed for these nights as our teams will look to have different themed games and activities that need assistance in leading. Volunteers may also be asked to help do other things, like serving food, helping with cleaning, or setting up.

TAG Time

Volunteers will have the opportunity to come and lead a T.A.G. (Talk about God) time component to participants. The grade levels the volunteer will lead are 1st through 7th. We will have this opportunity at all sites. The time for these components will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for 1st-7th graders. The volunteers will lead the pre-written lesson.

If you need any assistance,
please contact the Volunteer and Church Engagement Manager, Marcos Gonzales.
