Dr. Zan Holmes – 1999 Perkins Lecturer

ZanHolmesOur 1999 Perkins Lecturer was Dr. Zan W. Holmes, Jr. a native Texan, born in 1935 in San Angelo. He grew up in the parsonages of the West Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church where he was ordained Deacon and Elder.

He earned the Master of Sacred Theology and Bachelor of Divinity degrees from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University after receiving the Bachelor of Arts from Huston-Tillotson College. He has served with distinction in every aspect of public life to which he has given leadership including the Texas State Legislature from 1968-1972 while he also served as a District Superintendent. He was awarded honorary Doctor’s degrees from Dillard University and Huston-Tillotson.

Dr. Holmes’ is Pastor Emeritus of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas and associate professor of preaching at the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. However, he is possibly best known by the estimated 500,000 persons who have seen him weekly as the narrator-host to the first edition of the Disciple I Bible Study video series. On top of that, he was Adjunct Professor of Preaching at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University for 24 years.
